M: Museum            T: Tourist

T: Hello, I wonder if you could help me. Where do I find the USA exhibit?

M: Which part are you interested in?

T: The Statue of Liberty, I need to do some research about it.

M: It was presented by the people of France to the people of the United States in 1886 to honor the friendship between the two nations. Nowadays we consider it to be a symbol of liberty throughout the world.

T: Yes, and America couldn't have been liberated from Britain without the help of the French. Wow! It says here chat more than 5 million people visit the statue every year. That's a lot of people.

M: It's a very popular symbol to many, nowhere else on earth is the concept and ideals of personal freedom as dramatically.

TWhat can you tell me about its size? How tall is it exactly?

M: The statue pan is 115 feet tall and che pedestal is 89 feet tall. It weighs a whopping 225 tons !

T: That is huge. What's it made from? It often looks like stone in the pictures.

M: Actually, the statue is made from steel coated with copper and the pedestal is made from granite.

TI see. Who was it designed by? I guess it must have been a French designer.

MYou're right. It was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, but the interior framework was designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, also designer of the Eiffel Tower.

T: So, it was an entirely French project, then?

M: Not entirely, the pedestal was designed by an American architect, Richard Morris Hunt. But many people on both sides of the Atlantic put money into her construction.

T: Perhaps it is fitting that hundreds of thousands of ordinary people contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to her construction and that millions more contributed millions of dollars to ensure her continued existence.

M: Yes, she may have been created by the genius of a few visionaries, but the concept she represents speaks to the hearts and minds of ordinary men and women everywhere.

T: I hope that one day I can visit the museum at her base and see her for real.
